Spring Sprung

If you’ve been to the Cascade lately, there is no doubt that spring has sprung. The beds are dotted with all sorts of flowers and greenery, thanks to Mother Nature’s abundant rain and the many volunteers.

February’s work day brought out the usual kind spirits (Dang, Barbara, Tom, Laura, LD, Catalina, Chris and me) as well as a new face — Abel Guillen, Oakland Council Member for District 2.

We received a shout-out from Abel on his e-News:

Barbara Newcombe (photo), the fairy godmother of Cleveland Cascade, now in her nineties, helped organize “Friends of Cleveland Cascade” more than a decade ago. Volunteers meet at 9:00 am every first Saturday of the month to weed, clean and sweep “the stairs.” I hope more Lake Merritt residents, especially those new to the neighborhood, will join the cadre of volunteers to help steward this vital District 2 public place. If you enjoy running the stairs or the serenity of this local park, I encourage you to get some community exercise with the Friends of Cleveland Cascade.

Thank you, Abel, for your support!

See you all in March!
